Thanks to Renee Cullen of the Phoenix Centre in Swansea for putting me on to this one!
Dance Mat Typing from the BBC Schools pages is aimed at children 7-11years as a fun way to start touch typing.

update:
Dancing not for you? Want to test your speed? Why not try Type Racer - race against unknown random opponents or invite your friends to race against you.

catherine.padfield do you twitter? March 05, 2009 9:51 AM
Twitter seems to have taken off as the latest "must have" for those aspiring to be digital natives (leaving many of us wondering what all the fuss is about!)

If you would like to join the Twittering masses, take a look at this offering from Common Craft - another of their fabulous 'in plain English' series of simple instruction videos.

catherine.padfield broker poetry March 03, 2009 10:21 AM
I've just received this lovely poem from our fragrant broker, Sarah:

A Brokers job is never done, We're always on the go
Don't sit there thinking what to do I don't really know
Ask one of us, we're here to Help, nothing is too much trouble,
Call us up, E-mail or ask, we'll be there on the double!!

...is there no end to a Broker's talents!

Helen Kell Good Practice Guidance for Social Networking Sites February 25, 2009 10:37 AM

Debbie, the broker for North East Wales, has come across the ´Good Practice Guidance for the Providers of Social Networking and Other User Interactive Services 2008´.

The first UK Social Networking Guidance provides advice for industry, parents and children about how to stay safe online. This has been developed by a taskforce of representatives from industry, charity and law enforcement agencies including Vodafone, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

To find out more please visit the Home Office website.  I have uploaded a copy of the guidance to the community resource section of this website.

Helen Kell My Guide February 18, 2009 2:26 PM

The UK Online centres in England have adopted the My Guide website as a way to support new learners to use the Internet.

The website offers free and easy to use e-mail and search engine facilities without the user being bombarded with adverts, as the whole site is banner free. It also offers basic ICT training on a host of subjects from using a mouse and keyboard to looking for a job online. All of the courses are aimed at the beginner as they take their first few steps on the Internet.

The website also offers users the ability to change and save settings such as span size and text colour, as well as having an inbuilt screen reader.

To find out more visit them at www.myguide.gov.uk

Helen Kell AbilityNet on YouTube February 17, 2009 9:36 AM
AbilityNet is the UK’s leading charity concerned with all aspects of ICT and disability. I have been using their website for some years now as it has information and factsheets on adapting ICT to fit the needs of the user. Recently, I have found that they have their own channel on YouYube with short films and video diaries covering a wide range of topics, from voice recognition software to using adaptive technologies to play games.

To find out more, visit them at:

Cheers, Helen.
