catherine.padfield UK Social Networking Guidance April 14, 2008 12:13 PM

The first UK Social Networking Guidance provides advice for industry, parents and children about how to stay safe online. This has been developed by a taskforce of representatives from industry, charity and law enforcement agencies including Vodafone, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). available at: police.homeoffice.gov.uk/news-and-publications/publication/operational-policing/social-networking-guidance

Not just for Social Networking sites, but all interactive content sites.  The advice for Children & Young People pages are a bit to 'wordy' - there are better examples of this at Bebo's safety pages www.bebo.com/Safety.jsp

There are safety information videos and links to other resources for children, parents and teachers.

catherine.padfield Safer Children in a Digital World April 14, 2008 11:43 AM
Dr Tanya Byron's independent review looking at the risks to children from exposure to potentially harmful or inappropriate material on the internet and in video games was published on 27th March 2008.

The Review is about the needs of children and young people, and about preserving their right to take the risks that form an inherent part of their development by enabling them to play video games and surf the net in a safe and informed way.

Dr Byron says, "By listening to children and young people and putting them at the heart of this Review - and by replacing emotion with evidence - I hope I have provided some very necessary focus to what is a very necessary debate."

PDF versions of the Full Report, Annexes and supporting documentation are available at: www.dfes.gov.uk/byronreview/
