ICT and Volunteers – A Best Practice Guide

stephen.dixon Many Communities @One projects have benefited from volunteer support at various stages, either helping to get initiatives up and running or playing some part in their successful delivery.

As community ICT projects evolve and progress, it is important to consider an organisation’s relationship with those volunteers.

One challenge for those organisations facing funding issues for their ICT projects is how volunteers fit in to a plan for sustaining them.

Communities @One has linked to a guide from the ICT knowledgebase, is developed and managed by LASA – the London Advice Services Alliance - as a resource for community and voluntary organisations using ICT.

LASA has provided ICT advice to voluntary organisations since 1984.

The knowledgebase is designed to help community and voluntary sector organisations access the benefits of information technology. The knowledgebase is a comprehensive source of independent ICT information and advice.

The knowledgebase Guide to Working with ICT Volunteers covers four main areas:

• Basic Requirements – Commitment, Sustainability and Flexibility
• Before you begin
• Keeping track of progress
• Confidentiality and legal responsibility

TIP - If you find the guide is useful, print it off and add it to your volunteer training material.
